Heroes: One of the best TV shows in years!
It’s been weeks since I have seen Heroes with them going on their little break. I’m about to go watch tonight’s episode which I have been looking forward to for days. There hasn’t been a television show I have been watching this religiously for me in recent memory. What makes it such a great show?
Balance.
The show knows who it’s audience really is. Pretty much myself and people like me. 20’s - 40’s and grew up in the age of Star Wars and Star Trek. Back when comics were cool, and everyone had their favorite super hero. It would be easy to get all hardcore about that fact and fill the show with over the top cheesyness, but it doesn’t do that at all.
Heroes adds just the right amount of the real world into the show. Not too much that it becomes boring and just another TV drama, but enough to keep the mainstream types of people interested. This means I get to watch it with my wife and not alone which makes it even better. The events that happen in the show have a realism, and far-out aspect to them all at the same time. It’s a perfect balance.
Another great point of Heroes is it’s a story about characters. The great literature and movies in history were not based on a great story, but was based on great characters. Lord of The Rings, Of Mice and Men, Star Wars, Shawshank Redemption. These are works that revolve around their characters. They are timeless because people are timeless. Stories get old.
I will not leave you to go get my dose of enjoyment and escape from the real world into the world where things are just a bit, fantastical, but not too much.
