My Son’s High School Basketball Game
Yesterday I went to see my son’s high school basketball game after work. Luckily it was a home game and I got out of work on time to make it. He is in a smaller school and to be honest, they don’t have too much of an athletics program. It’s a good environment for my son with extra exercise and socializing along with all the valuable lessons learned being in an organized team sport. The league they play in is not the league that gets written about in the local paper, but it is entertaining to watch that games.
The games tend to lean heavily to one team or the other, but this was a more balanced game than some of the others I’ve seen from the school. My son is learning the fundamentals of the game well enough from the coach of the team, and fills his role well. Running back on defense, and sticking his man and keeping his hands up on defense. It’s good to see his doing his job, and doing it to the best of his ability. On offense they need some better plays in my opinion, but they have a couple of basics.
At this level of play, there are usually a couple of stand-outs that when they get the ball, you can be pretty sure they will take the shot. Whether that means running into a crowded defense and chucking it, or a jumper outside their range, you can see it coming. I wish the coach would reel them in more for that when it happens, but it apparently is OK with him as long as they hit a few.
All in all, a good game. My son was sore today, and is learning the value of not just stretching, but stretching well before a game. Certain things just have to be learned hands-on, as I’ve warned him enough times. Wait until he’s my age. The stretching might take longer than the game.
